Esta camiseta alternativa, conocida como "la del ketchup”, fue una de las más polémicas de la historia reciente del Athletic. Diseñada para competiciones europeas, rompía por completo con la tradición rojiblanca con un estampado abstracto en rojo y blanco que generó debate inmediato entre aficionados y prensa. Fue utilizada en la Copa de la UEFA 2004–05, en una etapa de transición del club.
Aquel Athletic estaba dirigido por Ernesto Valverde y contaba con futbolistas como Santiago Ezquerro, Ismael Urzaiz, Joseba Etxeberria, Andoni Iraola y Carlos Gurpegui. Una camiseta que no dejó indiferente a nadie y que, con el paso del tiempo, se ha convertido en pieza de culto: símbolo de una época en la que el Athletic se atrevió a experimentar sin perder su identidad competitiva en Europa.
