Esta camiseta rinde homenaje al Athletic Club subcampeón de Liga en la temporada 1997–98, una de las campañas más brillantes del club en la era moderna. San Mamés volvió a sentirse protagonista con un equipo competitivo, intenso y fiel a su identidad, que peleó el título hasta el final y selló la clasificación para la Liga de Campeones.
Fue el Athletic dirigido por Luis Fernández, con futbolistas como Julen Guerrero, Joseba Etxeberria, Ismael Urzaiz, Rafa Alkorta y Aitor Karanka, un bloque sólido que combinó carácter, juventud y oficio.
